Why Rethink Priorities

Our community of colleagues works across four major areas: animal welfare, global health and development, AI, surveys and data analysis, producing high-quality, actionable research that foundations and organizations use directly to increase their impact.

Our fully remote team spans 15 countries, bringing together some of the strongest talent in evidence-based research and operations globally. We pride ourselves on our open, respectful, and friendly culture, and care deeply about equity. Our staff surveys indicate that employees strongly feel their projects are important, their ideas are taken seriously, and they enjoy working at RP.

Our types of roles usually include:

  • Researchers and data analysts conducting rigorous desk research, creating forecasts, running surveys, and data analysis to advise policymakers, foundations, and charitable organizations on strategy
  • Operations and communication staff are building the infrastructure and voice of an agile, growing organization
  • Entrepreneurs founding new initiatives

“Very few organizations are seriously asking what is the best thing we can do, all things considered, and doing the rigorous research to work towards an answer. That's what makes working at Rethink Priorities so valuable.”

Benefits

We work hard, but we also know you have a family, friends, passions, and a life beyond your screen. Our benefits are designed to help you stay healthy, supported, and focused on the work that matters.

Unlimited time off

Everyone needs a healthy, happy, and productive life. We don’t limit time off for vacation or personal leave. In fact, employees have a minimum of 30 days off annually.

Flexible, remote working

Work when and where you’re most productive. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, we trust you to manage your time.

Competitive health coverage

While the details vary from country to country, we offer comprehensive health coverage through insurance and stipends to help cover out-of-pocket costs.

10% time for what matters to you

Every team member is encouraged to spend 10% of their time on projects they think are important, from professional development and courses to independent research.

Equipment funding

We cover the cost of the tools you need to do your best work, including computers, monitors, desks, and ergonomic equipment.

Parental leave

We offer up to 6–9 months of combined paid and unpaid parental leave, which can be taken prior to and/or during the first 2 years after a child’s birth or adoption.

“Long-term impact depends on building a culture where people can genuinely grow. Having 10% of time for development to strengthen skills, expand knowledge, and maintain professional relationships, isn't just good for individuals; it's what keeps the whole organization doing its best work over time.”

How we hire

We invest significant time in our hiring process to build the strongest possible team. We know that’s a big ask, so we pay candidates for completing assessment tasks and strive to make every stage fair and transparent.

A typical hiring process can include:

  • The initial application form, that is typically open for about three weeks.
  • Interview(s), one or more conversations with the hiring team.
  • Paid assessment tasks, work samples designed to simulate the work you’d do in the role.
  • Final evaluation and offer, reference checks, and a decision.

The exact steps vary by role. Please see individual job descriptions for details. We aim to complete the process within approximately six to ten weeks of the application closing date, and we aim to never take more than two weeks before you hear an update from us.

“Rethink Priorities lets me combine my values (growing up as a Jain with a very expansive view of the living beings that are capable of suffering), my skills (quantitative economics), lifestyle preferences (young family, remote work) in a way that is both deeply rewarding and impact oriented.”

Frequently asked questions

What title should I apply for?

Rethink Priorities often hires for research roles where we are relatively neutral about applicants’ seniority or experience. Because our research is interdisciplinary and relatively unique, we often don’t have specific background requirements. However, we want to recognize candidates’ past accomplishments, so we use the following title system for new research hires. When applying for a role that asks you to select a title, we strongly encourage you to choose based on these criteria. We will consider any candidate for any role, but more senior roles broadly require more research experience and knowledge.

While we use this system for external hires, staff can often move through our system without meeting these criteria — we tend to value experience at Rethink Priorities more highly than outside experience.

  • Research Assistant / Associate Researcher: Less than two years of experience doing research similar to that required for the role.
  • Research Analyst / Researcher: 2–4 years of research experience, and/or an advanced degree (such as a Master’s or PhD) in a relevant field. Graduate experience only counts toward the year requirement if your research was very similar to what you’ll do at Rethink Priorities.
  • Senior Researcher / Senior Research Manager: 5–9 years conducting relevant research, and likely a terminal degree (such as a PhD) or equivalent additional experience.

For non-research roles, we will typically advertise jobs at particular levels, with salaries set on the same scale.

How do you determine salary?

We use a transparent formula based on title level and experience. We do not negotiate salaries with any staff or applicants; this is by design to ensure fairness and consistency.

Can I be considered from anywhere in the world?

In most cases, yes, as long as you have local work authorization. However, we typically prefer candidates in American, European, or African time zones, since most of the team is based in these regions and some meetings occur during those working hours. Candidates outside these zones are still welcome to apply.

How do internal applications work?

Current employees may apply for open roles. Internal candidates go through the same hiring process, and their applications are evaluated blindly alongside external candidates. To ensure fairness, we ask internal candidates not to share that they have applied with anyone outside the People and Culture team coordinating the hiring round.

Will you provide feedback on my application?

We receive a large number of highly qualified applicants and can only advance a few people after each round due to time and budget constraints. We’re typically unable to provide individual feedback to candidates who are not selected to advance. For some roles, feedback is available upon request for those who reach the final stage. Roles at Rethink Priorities are competitive, even for highly qualified candidates. If you’re not selected, it usually reflects a very specific set of needs rather than a judgment on your ability. We encourage you to continue applying for other positions that suit your expertise, and we would certainly be happy to see your application for future openings at RP.

Do you have guidelines for applicants?

Our application forms request all the information we need. Unless explicitly requested, please do not include a cover letter, photograph, or personal information not relevant to the role (such as marital status, age, or identity traits). To ensure fairness, we ask that applicants not request meetings with hiring committee members during the process.

How can I learn about future openings?

Subscribing to our newsletter for the latest opportunities.

“My job is to make sure the generosity of our funders translates into real, lasting impact. At Rethink Priorities, I can do that with confidence because the research we produce directly shapes where philanthropic dollars can do the most good.”

Inclusiveness

Rethink Priorities has a Justice, Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity (JEID) Committee that helps ensure our workplace and work processes are equitable, inclusive, and supportive for people from diverse backgrounds. The committee advises on organizational practices, conducts an annual JEID survey, raises awareness of JEID considerations across the organization, and supports RP’s ability to conduct collaborative, rigorous work.

We encourage individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply, and we especially encourage applications from people of color, self-identified women, and non-binary individuals who are excited about contributing to our mission.

If you need any adjustments during the application process or have any questions, please let us know at jeid@rethinkpriorities.org.
